Slayerwulfe: Museum__New Amsterdam__As in before N.Y.

Hi ! Welcome to slayerwulfe9slayerwulfe : American  http://sites.google.com/site/slayerwulfe6ragnar0k/

About the images presented here. I believe this may be one of the oldest, intact pieces in American ceramics.
Possibly 17th century, but even a good 18th century piece is worth adding to any data base of information.

It has been difficult ( which means impossible ) to get any reliable information on salt glazing a
basically Anorthite body.

this is the best you will ever see in American salt glazed stoneware and that's pretty much the end of this conversation, except all of you are allowed to have these images and you may do whatever you want with them, no restrictions, i don't care what you do with them. if you want better images just ask. if your curious, the blue is titanium

Sperm whale, Dolphin, Urchin ?
Strange things happen sometimes in the firing process. the whale and the dolphin are just fissures, it's the urchin that's most interesting, Quartz Inversion ? outside of the body.

The dark dot in the light colored square area, whatever this is several will fit  in the dark red below, it's possibly a variety of magnesium aluminate. /zirconium.

The lower dark red area is approx. 8 thousands of an inch wide. Interesting isn't it, how many times have you heard, only cobalt is able to withstand the higher temperatures as in under glaze decoration of  porcelain.
Stoneware and porcelain are very similar chemically, and I'm sure you have noticed it is under the glaze all of
it is. Most metallic oxides become soluble in the melting glaze, the splotchy light colored areas. This dark red   looks a lot like a spinel.

How beautiful chemistry really is, in this moment captured. Sodium combining with free silica as it becomes available,
this unglazed area is 1/2 inch across, hope you are able to appreciate it for what it is as you will never see it anywhere else.

A very flat bottom, on the interior, no clay slip applied.

Tin lead glazed bare feet.
